The Vision
When the staff of Lomitas Elementary began the task of defining its niche in the Victor Elementary School District and the community we looked to the future and saw the need to equip our students to use the technologies available to increase student achievement. With a firm handle on the standards to be mastered by students and an understanding that technology is a tool to be employed in that task we planned for the future.
The Process
Careful budgeting and planning was required to implement our vision of technology at Lomitas. Each year technology monies were spent to get closer to the goal of providing access to all students. As Lomitas didn't qualify for certain funding opportunities progress was slow. As monies became available through district programs rewarding school achievement they were devoted to furthering the plan. Successful grants and our PTA brought us closer to the goal.
Over the Top!
The final piece to our technology puzzle was put in place when we were able to install our fiber optic network and switches on the campus. Now we were ready to establish our computer lab and bring each classroom on campus online with high speed connectivity. We couldn't have done it without the generous support of our district, allowing us the opportunity to put our vision to work.
Technology in Action
Students now have access on a daily basis to technologies which enhance their achievement in all content areas. On any given day you can be see students employing technology in a variety of pursuits. Kindergartners and 1st graders enjoy the reading and writing capabilties of WiggleWorks. Students "at risk" work on remediaton of skills in Fast ForWord. Second grade students publish works for their classrooms with Student Writing Center or Kid Works. You might see third through sixth grade students work on information literacy skills via cyberhunts, webquests and research projects. These activities along with our Reading Counts! program keeps our technology program moving at full speed.
Teachers use the available technology to inform parents of student progress, communicate with parents via e-mail, complete student assessments and prepare report cards.
We are proud of what we have accomplished at Lomitas with technology and we will continue to move forward providing our students the best possible opportunities the budget and our creativity will allow!
